How do I light a BBQ?

Sounds easy enough. But there is more to it, the heat must be perfectly even. How much charcoal should I use? How should I lay the charcoal out? When is it ready to start grilling? Should I make like a little pyramid? How far away from the food? My Grill is a 30 inch cheapy grill nothing fancy.

OK, here we go.
Start by piling the charcoal more or less into a pyramid. It should be no more than 2 inches from where the grill will end up. If you are planning to do a lot of grilling, you can go up to the grill.
Then add about an ounce and a half of lighter fluid per pound of charcoal. From the time to put down the canister to picking up the match book is all the soak time needed. Light the briquettes at the halfway point of your stack.
Let the flames go for a bit.
When the inferno part has passed put the grill in place. If you have the stack high, use a poker to knock down the stack so it is more or less even.
When the coals have gotten more gray than black you are good to go.
