How do you use an infrared burner on a gas grill?

I just purchased an outdoor grill that has 3 front main burners, a sear burner located in the bottom of the grill with a rear infrared burner that is located on the back inside of the grill just above the grates. It does not lay flat like all the other burners. The user's guide doesn't give any indication for what it is used for, just calls it a rear infrared burner and tells how to turn it on! What is it used for? This is not a searer, the gill has one of those also. Thanks
