What causes my gas fireplace to make a loud, popping sound after I turn it off...and is it dangerous?

I have a gas fireplace. When I turn it on from the switch on the wall, it lights up just fine...and runs steady and perfect. When I turn the switch off, the flame goes out (with the exception of the pilot light, which stays lit). About 5 minutes after the switch is turned off, there is a loud popping (almost banging) sound that happens every time. Any idea what that is? More importantly...is it possibly dangerous? Any insight is greatly appreciated.

Guessing it is caused from contraction of the unit or ducts when the unit is cooling off. Since it happens 5 minutes after turning it off, this would make sense.
